Bengaluru: Daily Namma Metro touched 3 lakh on Monday, the highest because the service was continued after the second Covid-19 wave lock on September 7, BL Yashwanth Chavan, Head of Public Relationship, BMRCL, said Ridership on Monday (November 15) 3.1 lakh (1 , 5 lakh on the purple line and 1.6 lakh on the green line).
However, while these numbers are a significant increase, they are still far from those 5.2 lakh people who use the Metro before a hit pandemic in March last year.
The BMRCL Records showed the highest passenger in its history was more than 6 lakh on October 25, 2019 (purple line: 3.3 lakh, green line: 2.7 lakh).
Chavan said the average daily passenger income fell from Rs 1.1 Crore (January 2020) to Rs 59.4 Lakh in October 2021.
“Daily operational costs are now Rs 92.3 lakh a day,” he said.
Experts said the resumption of normal life, recognition of tokens, extension of time and network expansion (Silk Institute-Yelatrenahalli and Mysore Road-Kengeri) is the reason for a surge in the ridership.
Namma Metro now has a 56km network (25.6km purple line) and green line (30km) compared to 42km before Covid-19.
However, passengers cannot touch pre-covid time in the near future because of home-job arrangements for technicians and office visitors and fear of the virus.
Officials BMTC Ridership UpbMTC said they now operate around 5,300 buses including 5,151 non-AC vehicles and 146 air conditioners.
BMTC’s ridership is now around 25 lakh.
“Our daily passengers increased from 20 lakh in October to 22 lakh now.
Daily passenger income is around Rs 3 Crore now,” said an BMTC official.
