Bengaluru: The Department of Transportation has proposed a tariff of Rs 25 for the first 5km and Rs 50 for 10 km to the electric bicycle taxi.
According to the electric bicycle taxi scheme Karnataka, flat rates for vehicles will be in two slabs.
“We will issue a notice as soon as we get permission from the government,” said a senior transport department official.
The distance between the origin and destination of the trip should not be more than 10 km.
“Taxi e-bikes will promote urban mobility and acts as a connectivity solution first and miles of citizens to access public transport, especially the Metro,” said an official.
With Rs 5 per km, taxi e-bikes will be cheaper than autorickshaws and taxis.
For autos, the minimum fare for the first 1.9km is Rs 25 and for every KM, Rs 13.
For application-based cab aggregators such as Ola and Uber, commuters pay a minimum of Rs 75 for a small cabin and Rs 150 for luxury taxi for 4 km first.
For a city taxi, amounting to Rs 18 per km for non-AC taxi and Rs 24 per km for AC.
Officials said Rapido, who has operated a non-electric bike taxi in the city since 2016, and the two-wheel-based rental companies have expressed interest to bounce application to operate a taxi e-bikes.
Vivekananda Hallekere, CEO and Co-founder of Bounce says: “We are planning to start a taxi service bicycle from next month.
Currently, we have about 6,000 electric scooters in the city.
We have factory at Manesar in Haryana which has the capacity to produce more than 10,000 month.
“Ola and Uber has launched a bicycle taxi service in advance but suspended operations after the transportation department confiscate their vehicles to run without permission.
In 2016, the department take action against a bicycle taxi service Ubermoto and Ola.
In 2019, Ola restarting the service but suspended it after the crackdown.
A spokesman Ola said when present, there are no plans to run the e-bike taxi.
