Chandigarh: The UT-Permanent Financial Committee led by Advisor has approved the project to build 209 bus queue shelter in the city.
This step has come after discussion among senior bureaucrats and department of planning and engineering officers.
The construction, design, material and financial aspects are debated before approving Rs 12 Crore for the project.
But with tenders have not been called, the project is expected to cost that much.
All shelter places will be concrete and on the lines built as samples near ISBT in the road separating sector 17 and 18, according to the plan.
This project was approved five years ago but cannot be realized because of many design problems, make and construction mode such as public private partnerships.
This project gets an interest in a few days ago with the transportation department that applies an intelligent transportation system (ITS).
With delays in the construction of shelter, the department can install “passenger information display screen” only in several bus queue shelter places.
The screen is very important for the project and provides information about bus routes, arrival timings and departures.
The initial decision of the engineering department to go for a stainless steel bus shelter has drawn criticism.
The critics have a satisfied concrete shelter can be built with half the number.
The design and materials of steel shelter also do not match the original design of the concrete shelter which is in line with the overall city architecture plan, the critics said.
Route plan: UT has hired Ahmedabad-based universities due to planning a bus route in the city.
However, UT said, said, it requires more buses to run in the city by covering all areas and increasing their frequency if they plan to increase public transportation and reduce private vehicles on the road.
