Bengaluru: Almost a month after the direction of the High Court, the government ordered BBMP and other civil institutions to clear encroachment falling in a 30-meter buffer zone of tanks, lakes and rivers.
On Wednesday, KA Hidayathulla, a joint secretary to the government, urban development (coordination), issued an order, stating the structure that stands in the buffer tank zone, lakes and rivers must be released to provide a healthy environment.
While the encroachment of lakes and tanks is a major problem, BBMP has not blocked the mining of encroachment.
The President Commissioner of Gaurav Gupta said, “according to the government’s direction, the encroachment of the lake will be cleaned.” B Reddy Shankar Babu, Special Commissioner (Lake), acknowledged that many tanks and lakes have been interrupted but they have not confirmed the numbers.
A survey will be carried out and the action begins, he added.
This step came after HC on July 14 direct the Urban Development Department to issue instructions to all cities to ensure the elimination of illegal construction on their buffer tanks / lakes.
