Guwahati: The court here in Guwahati gave a guarantee to the MLA Congress from the Constituency of Baghbar Assam Sherman Ali Ahmed, who was arrested on October 2 on charges of making disrespectful statements against Assam’s agitation martyrs (1979-1985).
Ali received a guarantee after the police failed to submit a chargesheet in 60 days.
He was released after two months.
Ali was slapped on charges of “provocation with the intention to cause riots”, “promoting hostility between different groups of religion”, “intentional insults with the intention to provoke violations of peace” and “statements that create or promote hostility, hatred or sense among classes “.
In a video that became viral after the eviction of driving in Dholpur in Darrang District Assam in September, Ali was said to be seen martyrs of foreign anti-foreign movements as “ghataks” (assassins).
This has triggered a massive reaction across the political and non-political spectrum.
Following the video, some campfires were filed at different police stations in the state.
