SILCHAR: Three persons, including a retired armyman, were arrested along with drugs from a hotel in Silchar.
DSP (Cachar) Kalyan Kumar Das said acting on a tipoff, police on Thursday evening raided a hotel located in the Hailakandi Road area of Silchar town and confiscated 2,000 YABA/WY tablets worth Rs 20 lakh in the market from the possession of the three persons who hail from Mizoram.
The arrested persons have been identified as Lal Rabula, a retired army jawan, Sytimpari and Bannal Joni, both women.
Police also detained the manager of the hotel.
Lal Rabula informed police that he had voluntarily retired from the Army in 2015 and is now employed in a Mizoram-based security agency.
According to the DSP, the arrested persons are involved in a drug smuggling racket across the northeast and other parts of the country.
In another incident, a notorious drug peddler was apprehended by police in Nilambazar in Karimganj district on Thursday.
The arrested peddler was identified as Jakir Hussain (36), a resident of Kanishail in Karimganj.
Sources said a team of police officials of Nilambazar police station, led by OC Kamalesh Singh, embarked on a bus near Nilambazar police station.
Jakir was travelling on the same bus.
The policemen, who were in plain clothes, conducted a search operation and nabbed Jakir with around 24 grams of brown sugar.
The market value of the seized contraband is around Rs 1 lakh, a source said.
Jakir was produced before a court in Karimganj on the day and remanded in police custody for three days.
Police are hopeful that they would be able to gather various details about drug dealings in Karimganj after grilling him, the sources said.
