BENGALURU: Fraudsters recently hosted a fake website in the name of a prestigious Bengaluru-based hospital and offered Rs 5 crore to anyone wanting to sell their kidney.
Dr Niranjan Rai from Manipal Hospitals, Old Airport Road, filed a complaint with cybercrime police.
Acting on Dr Rai’s complaint, police have registered a case against one Dr Thomas Joseph, who had allegedly opened the website.
The fraudsters had faked the website in such a manner that it resembled the original website of Manipal Hospitals.
“Sell your one kidney for Rs five crore in Indian rupees; contact us today and get paid the same day; you can sell your one kidney and live normal life,” the message from “doctor Thomas Joseph” read on the fake website.
According to police, those logging into the website were being directed to different links.
“Cheating appears to happen at the stage of paying registration fee,” an investigating officer said, adding: “We are tracking the miscreants, who seem to be operating from a different state.
We are in the initial stages of investigation and need time to say if anyone has fallen prey to these fraudsters.
If anyone has lost money to them, they can approach us.” Recently, Bagalur police from north east division had arrested a Nigerian national for overstaying and found that he was randomly sending emails and messages on social media, promising to buy and sell kidney for money.
Asked if there is any connection between the two cases, police said, “We are not sure if the two cases are related.
If they are, it will come out during probe.”
