Mangaluru: acting on the lead provided by a former service, the police recovered five grenades, who were at least 40 years old, from the Bendangady Taluk District of Dakshina Kannada on Saturday.
Dakshina Kannada Police Inspector Rishikesh Soniawan said ExServiceman Jayakumar Poojary summoned the police station and told them that “some unknown people” have left several grenades near their homes in Ilantila Village.
Poojary said he found a grenade near a barbed wire fence as he walked down the mud track to his house.
Four grenades found scattered and fifth in the yellow plastic cover.
He kept it in a safe place on his premise before calling the police.
Police officials, with a bomb disposal team, rushed to the village, in addition to launching an investigation into the grenade source.
“The initial probe showed a handheld grenade made in a weaponry factory between 1979 and 1983.
We will communicate with the Army about seizures and check who is given,” he said.
The grenade seized after taking safety precautions according to the procedure.
