GUWAHATI: The flood scenario in Assam worsened on Monday with one more district — Biswanath — being affected following heavy rainfall and continuous release of water by the Neepco’s Ranganadi project.
Reports said about 31,900 people have been affected by the floods in the two districts of Biswanath and Lakhimpur so far.
The situation may further worsen with the Met department indicating that heavy rainfall is likely to continue across the state over the next three-four days.
Till Sunday, about 3,000 people in Lakhimpur district alone were impacted by the floods.
According to an Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin issued on Monday evening, no less than 31,970 people — including over 10,000 children — in 22 villages in three revenue circles in Lakhimpur and one in Biswanath districts have been affected by the floods.
In Lakhimpur district, Bihpuria is the worst hit with 28,928 people in 13 villages being affected by flood waters, while over 2,240 people have been affected in a single village in North Lakhimpur and 791 people being affected in four villages in Nowboicha.
The Met department has warned that heavy rain and thundershowers are likely to occur at most places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya and at many places in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Meanwhile, reports said Balijan river embankment in Biswanath district also damaged at Halem.
According to the ASDMA, reports of erosion have come in from several areas of Baksa, Goalpara, Kamrup, Barpeta, Morigaon, Biswanath and Nalbari districts.
The Central Water Commission (CWC) on Monday said above normal flood situation — where the water-level is touching or exceeding the danger level but below highest flood level — has been seen in Brahamaputra basin at Naematighat in Jorhat, Sonitpur and Nalbari districts.
