CHANDIGARH: Four people were booked for allegedly duping a woman of Rs 2 lakh on the pretext of investing her money in a chit, or a “committee”, fund.
Police said the accused are Deepak, Tridev, his wife Meenu and Simarjeet Kaur, all residents of Sector 56.
Pappi Devi, a resident of Sector 56, said she knew Kaur for last three years.
Kaur used to run a “committee”.
Deepak became a member and all of them started a “committee” of Rs1.90 lakh for17 months in 2019.
Devi alleged Kaur took the entire money, promising to pay her.
Later, her husband fell ill and was admitted to a private hospital.
Deepak and Meenu then started two more “committees” of Rs 2 lakh each in the area.
She alleged after completing their tenure, the accused did not pay her Rs 1.90 lakh.
However, Deepak along with others demanded more money on behalf of Kaur.
They also allegedly threatened her to pay the money or give them the possession of her house.
She alleged she filed a complaint at the Sector 56 police post but no action was taken.
Later, Devi filed a petition in a court seeking directions to police to register a case against the accused.
The court ordered the police to book the accused.
