BY-S BHUVANESHWARI Bengaluru: Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) TS Nagabharana has written to Google India, Bengaluru, asks for technology majors to improve the names of the city, cities and villages of Karnataka wrong on Kannada on the Google Maps application and web platforms.
Authority said he had noticed the names of several cities, the city and Karnataka Village were wrongly spelled on Google Maps and that they needed to be repaired.
KDA also offers Google’s help in this case.
At present, Google Maps has effectively helped everyone, including tourists, and there is a danger that people will continue to use the names of spelled places, assuming they are right and it might be the norm, said KDA officials.
“On August 21, we wrote to Google to improve the names of places in Karnataka and are waiting for their response,” said Nagabharanana, added: “Every time we ask them about such mistakes, they quote some technical problems.” Nagabharana also expressed dissatisfaction for the fact that there was no Google India contact number available except their address.
He quoted a few examples of the wrong names spelled on Google Maps: Whitefield became Whittyfyeld, Ripponpete as Ripponpeta, Harnahalli as Hanahalli, Tumakuru as Tumakura, Kuppalli as Kuppali, Honnali as Honnalli, Saundatti Yellamma as a copal and gusmitkal.
According to Nagabharana, Mangalore is still written in English in Google Maps.
Nagabharanana said he had also attached a list of misspelled names with the letter and added that only taking into account every error ‘technical problem’ is not true.
He said they had to appoint someone to see such an error, or bring help several organizations.
“They can also claim that errors occur when open sources contribute to it, but when they use content from open sources, it is their responsibility to correct errors,” he added.
