Guwahati: Students from Gahati University (GU) began returning home on Tuesday because the hostel had been closed in time 20 students tested positive covid in the last three days.
The hostel will be closed until December 19.
Overall 11 students were tested positively on Monday at 9 hostels for boys on campus.
The district government has increased tests in hostels from all educational institutions here to identify cases in the background of increasing concerns over the new variant, Omicron.
The hostel has been thrown to students in recent weeks because the Covid situation has improved.
Students also participated in the election of trade unions on the recent campus with voters and high participation.
The source of the State Health Department told TI that the source of infection seemed to be a local transmission.
On Monday, six other students were tested positive at Borooah College during a random test.
“The Daily Covid Test Target still has 10,000 in greater Guwahati.
But the number of tests that actually fell in a few hundred.
So random test policies have been adopted in educational institutions where students come with each other during class and other activities,” said an official Senior health department.
At GU, six of the 20 students have shifted to the medical medical hospital gahati but the administration says they are asymptomatic and stable.
“Students have been advised to leave the hostel and live in house isolation for the next few days,” additional DC said, Kumbrup (Metro), Dhruba Jyoti Hazarika.
Staff and faculty members, who might come into contact with infected students, will be tested on campus in the next few days.
