VIJAYAPURA: In a case of suspected honour killing, a Dalit youth and his lover were allegedly murdered by the girl’s family at Saladahalli village in Devara Hipparagi taluk on Tuesday afternoon.
Vijayapura SP Anupam Agarwal told TOI that Basavaraj Madivalapaa Badiger, 19, an autorickshaw driver at Saladahalli village, belonged to Madar community.
He and his lover Davalbi Bandagisab Tambad, 18, from the neighbouring Khanapur, were allegedly murdered by her father and other family members.
“As per the villagers’ information, the girl’s family members found the couple together at a field and informed her father.
He and other family members rushed to the field and stabbed them after tying them with a rope,” the SP said.
“Prima facie, it looks like a case of honour killing.
But the case has to be investigated further.
The accused are absconding, and we are searching for them,” he added He added that no arrest has been made yet in connection with the double murder.
Villagers said that the boy was seeing the girl for the past six months.
“Her family members had warned Badiger to stay away from her.
But they continued to meet, much to the chagrin of the girl’s family,” they added.
