New Delhi: The Government Haryana has released 16,000 cusecs of water in Yamuna from a series of Hathnikund in Yamuna Nagar and the crisis in the capital will be resolved now, the Delhi Jal Board of Deputy Chairperson of Raghav Chadha said on Tuesday.
He said Haryana released Delhi’s legitimate water share after DJB moved the Supreme Court and held several rounds of talks with neighboring state officials.
In 1996, the Apex Court had told the Haryana government and other countries to share Yamuna water to ensure that there was no shortage of drinking water in Delhi.
The water utility on Sunday moved SC which was looking for instructions to the Government of Haryana to release the Delhi water section.
“The Haryana government on Tuesday released 16,000 cusec water which will reach Delhi in three to four days.
After this, the water crisis in the capital will finish and people will get clean drinking water,” Chadha said.
Cusec is a flow unit (especially water) equal to one cubic foot per second.
“We tried to build pressure on the government Haryana.
We even submitted a petition in SC and held several rounds of talks with neighboring state officials,” he added.
Chadha previously said Haryana held 120 MGD (million gallons per day) water belonging to Delhi, which led to the water crisis in the United area.
He said the surface of the water in the Wazirabad pool had reached the lowest sign since 1965 and the river had dried because Haryana did not release water.
DJB officials said the level in the Wazirabad pool had dropped from a normal level of 674.5 feet to 667 feet.
Water from the Wazirabad pool was withdrawn for treatment at Wazirabad, Okhla and Chandrawal care plants.
Water treated and then supplied to Central, South and West Delhi.
DJB 935 MGD water equipment to city residents with a request of 1,150 mgd.
At present, the capital has received 479 MGDs against 609 MGD from Haryana.
In addition, he pulled ground water 90 mgd and received 250 mgd from the Gangaan channel above.
Chadha previously said that with Haryana held water 120 MGD, the river had truly dried up and operational capacity to various processing plants was reduced by 40 to 50 percent.
The water supply has been hit in Central Delhi, South Delhi, West Delhi and the NDMC area where important institutions, including Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Supreme Court, the residence of the Prime Minister, the embassies are, he said.
