Bengaluru: Karnataka has seen 4,125 cases of Musormycosis until October 22 since the second wave of pandemics broke out in April this year.
There were 476 deaths due to post-covid fungal infections during the period.
Fungal infections, however, have decreased after the ebbing wave of Covid August and so on.
“In all states, 59 cases of Musormycosis and four deaths were reported in October to Friday,” Health Department official said.
The state began compiling mukormycosis data (including April cases) in early May after a surge in cases posting the second wave.
The emergence of musormycosis generally occurs two weeks after Covid, but there are equally reported examples even when the person is still infected.
Bengaluru, the second wave episitation of Covid infection, reported the highest number of mucoricosis cases in Country: 755.
Ninety patients died.
After Bengaluru, the highest number of musormycosis cases was seen in Vijayapura (308), followed by a BELOGIAVI (283) and Kalaburagi (217).
Bagalkot and Chitradurga reported 212.
Overall, eight districts each recorded more than 200 cases.
Kodagu sees at least (3) and and zero death.
Dr.
Suresh NV, Surgeon District, Bengaluru, said cases in the state capital had dropped.
Fourteen cases and one death have been reported in the city in October to Friday, according to data with Dr.
Suresh.
However, hospitals have seen several patients come for follow-up consultation and corrective procedures.
It can be remembered that during the second wave, some patients suffering from diabetes and use long steroids are influenced by injection of fungal during or post-covid care.
In some cases, vision is lost when the fungus penetrates the eyes.
Acute deficiency Amphotericin b antifungal drugs also cause obstacles in treatment.
Strangely, some musormycotic patients do not show covid symptoms and not on steroids too.
They showed the presence of Covid antibodies when tested for exposure to the SARS-COV2 past.
Although there is no clear answer about what causes the emergence of musicycosis infection in the middle of a pandemic, one theory is that the Delta variant, the use of steroids and high diabetes status is a causative factor.
Dr.
Deepak HaldiPur, Ahter Surgeon, Trustwell Hospital, suspected that the surge in mukormycosis cases was largely caused by the Delta variant.
“In some cases, we see an increase in blood sugar levels, which can be caused by a variant.
However, hospitals do not see new cases in the past half a month,” he said.
