Aizawl: A Mizoram official has asked countries to consume locally planted foods as far as possible and avoid meat, fruits and vegetables that come from outside.
Advisers, released by Deputy Commissioner of Mizoram from the Food Control Authority and Food License, Monday came after doubts stated on social media that food items entered the state after the economic blockade of 13 days, could be falsified.
Social media feared that criminals may have been damaged by food, including packaging food, as revenge for the death of 6 Assam police in the border clashes between armed police personnel at the Mizoram-Assam border in July in July 26.
Lalsawma said Mizoram had become more or less independent in fruit and vegetable production.
Farmers produce enough vegetables and fruits to feed people even in urban areas, including Capital Aizawl City with a population of nearly 4 lakh, he said.
Local horticultural products are not only fresh, but safe and hygienic because of the fact that chemical fertilizers and pesticides / insecticides are not used for cultivation.
Even organic manure is used in most agriculture, especially in the Jhums or Slash-and-Burn tribal cultivation method, where the top land is rich enough to produce good plants.
He suggested that it was safer to eat local products than imported from outside the country, because it was not known whether they were safe for human consumption.
“Because of the absence of advanced food testing laboratories in the state, all imported food goods from outside cannot be tested,” he said, adding that food poisoning remains a possibility.
He said that someone had to ensure that food items packed were not damaged and the packaging food that was damaged should not be consumed and the date / month of manufacture and expiration time must be examined carefully.
