Issewal (Ludhiana): Jaswinder Kaur aged 12 years when he last saw his brother Sepoy Sarup Singh Sekhon in 1971.
“Last time he was here, he had promised to make me educated and my sister married,” Jaswinder said, around 62 year now.
Sepoy Sekhon was 24 years old when he died Syahid in the 1971 war.
Unlike many other people, his martyr was not well documented.
“I got married after my brother-in-law, but I had heard that he was a brave person.
He was not married and served the army for less than two years when he sacrificed his life in the war.
We heard that he did not get out of the tank even when he was asked when he was asked To leave, “said Rashminder Kaur, widowed by Sepoy Sekhon Kulwant Singh, who died five years ago.
Rashminder now lives in a family house with her daughter-in-law and two grandchildren live in a family home.
His son, Harmanjot Singh, is working in Dubai.
The martyr also survived by two sisters, Jaswinder Kaur and Nareshpal Kaur, both married.
Rashminder said Father Sepoy Sekhon Bhan Singh worked as a security guard in a factory on the banks of the Hoogly River in West Bengal.
After his death 33 years ago, Kulwant worked there, but he also died five years ago.
The family still has a picture of the sepoy sekhon and quote given to the family by the Army Chief of Staff in December 1999.
Jaswinder said his brother had been brave since childhood.
“My sister and my mother told me that there was a bush forest on the side of the canal that passed our village, Issewal, where the thief would hide and loot the people who returned from work in Ludhiana.
Brother, who was in class VIII at the time That, had seen two thieves in the bushes and went to Mullanpur to tell the police, after that they were arrested.
The police officer had given him Rs 10 for courage at that time, “Jaswinder said.
He said Sepoy Sekhon had returned on three occasions after joining the army.
“After he joined the troops, he came twice on leaves, respectively 28 days and then vacation two months in about two years.
During that time, he got Gali Borewell in our field because we would face water problems.
He also said That he wanted to get me an educated and made my younger brother marry after he left the next time, but he died in the war.
We stayed at Kucha’s house at that time and he wanted the Roof Pucca, “he added.
He said the whole village was proud of his brother.
Nareshpal, who was three years old to sarup, said when they got a telegram to tell them about the martyrdom of his brother on December 7, 1971, he posted on the Gujarat border, but they did not know where he reached the martyr.
“He posted with artillery wings as a wireless operator and has died after the tank was attacked.
This is the military official who came to return his belongings, including his uniform, after about two and a half months his death had told us,” said Nareshpal Kaur (68) , whose husband Captain Balbir Singh Gill died four months ago.
Nareshpal said the government had promised to get a bus holder built in the village, but it did not happen.
“The small grants we get for sarup sacrifice have been spent on memorial in front of our parents’ house in Issewal, so people know about our brothers,” he added.
