Aizawl: President of the State Congress of Mizoram and former Main Minister Lal Thanhawla said he would immediately retire from politics and continue the party’s leadership to younger and energetic leaders.
The 83-year-old veteran politician told reporters on Sunday that he had decided to retire from politics and did not fight for the next assembly election in 2023.
In a public speech at the party office on Friday, the Congress leader also indicated his intention to oppose the next assembly selection .
He said that he would hold Congress leadership only for current terms (2019-2022) to provide room for younger leaders, more capable and energetic.
The former Main Minister five times expressed hope that the Congress Party would continue to grow under new leadership.
Sources that are highly placed said the current Vice President of Congress and former Finance Minister, Lalsawta is likely to replace Lal Thanhawla as head of the party.
Lal Thanhawla has joined the underground movement which was dipelopoed by the Mizo National Front (MNF) in the 1960s and held active politics after his release from prison in 1967.
In 1973 he became President of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), his post he was Have resistant to date.
