Guwahati: More than 100 people allegedly attacked the police team when they went to pick up a man in connection with the case of domestic violence in a village in Howly in Barpeta Regency Assam lower on Monday night.
The masses attacked the team with sticks and machetes to protect the defendant, one Manihar Khan, who finally escaped in riots, police said.
The other attackers escaped from the place after police reinforcements reached the area.
Some police officers and locals, who were part of a horde, were injured in clashes.
The police used an empty fire to disperse the horde and seized several machetes and sticks from those arrested.
The team captured three people on charges of using the power to prevent public servants to issue their assignments.
Amitabh Sinha, SP from Barpeta, said: “The police team went to the village to look for one Manihar Khan, after a case registered against him for allegedly attacking his wife.
When our team reached the village, a horde of more than 100 suddenly attacked with sticks and machetes.
