CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government’s move to grant frequent paroles to the controversial head of Dera Sacha Sauda Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, a rape and murder convict, has raised many eyebrows.
One of the victim’s family has questioned the government’s intention over “special treatment” to the sect chief.
Anshul Chhatarpati, whose father and journalist Ram Chander Chhatarpati was murdered by Gurmeet, has questioned the government, asking how many rape and murder convicts languishing in Haryana jails have been given such “special treatments”.
The family is upset over the “frequent paroles and relaxations” given by the Manohar Lal Khattar-led Haryana government to the dera chief.
It has expressed apprehension that by taking him out of jail on medical grounds, the government has been allowing the dera chief to meet the sect followers and such things may create a serious law and problem in future.
Anshul, the deceased journalist’s elder son, has also accused the government of extending such facilities to the dera chief for political motives.
“A jail inmate can be admitted to the civil hospital concerned or at most in PGIMS Rohtak, which is apex medical institution of the state, for treatment.
But the Haryana government has started a new trend by giving preferential treatment to Gurmeet Ram Rahim, a convict in rape and murder cases, by providing him five-star treatment at one of the top hospitals of the country,” he said.
Anshul was reacting to the government’s move to permit dera chief to take medical treatment at Gurugram’s Medanta hospital.
“Earlier police had taken him to a farmhouse in Gurugram to meet his mother, where he interacted with other members of the dera management.
Why has the state forgotten so early that he is the same person who caused law and order situation problem in most of the northern part of the country, property worth crores was damaged and around 40 persons lost their lives because he tried to question the supremacy of law,” he added.
Anshul added that the state government’s intentions were questionable, as such frequent relaxations indicate the possibility of some trouble.
“Stop making a mockery of the entire system for a rape and murder convict.
Don’t put the state on the path of a bloodbath for political motives,” he said while demanding the government not extend any special treatment to the dera chief.
The dera chief has been taken out of Rohtak’s Sunaria jail on several occasions in the recent past.
On Sunday, he was taken to Medanta on medical grounds.
On May 12, he was brought to PGIMS Rohtak for health reasons.
On May 17, he was taken to Gurugram on one-day parole in police custody to meet his mother.
On June 3, he was taken to PGIMS Rohtak for a health check-up.
In October last year, the Haryana government had taken him to a Gurugram hospital to meet his mother.
The dera chief is presently lodged in Rohrak’s Sunaria jail following his conviction in rape and murder cases.
