Guwahati: A drug seller suspected of being injured after the police opened fire when he was suspected of trying to escape from detention in Jorhat Assam District on Friday, a senior police officer said.
He was treated in the state of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), where his condition was declared stable.
Superintendent Police Ankur Jain said the incident occurred when the defendant was taken to Jorhat from Dhubri.
“The man came down from a police vehicle with the pretext of alleviating himself.
However, when he tried to escape, our personnel shot him at the foot,” the officer said.
The accusation previously escaped from detention and police Jorhat had arrested him from Dhubri on Thursday, he said.
A total of 32 defendants had been shot dead and 58 were injured while allegedly tried to escape from police detention since the second BJP government, led by Minister of Himanta Minister Buswa Sarma, assumed the office in May.
The opposition accused that the police had changed “happy triggers”, but Sarma said law enforcers had “full operational freedom” to combat criminals under the law.
