Guwahati: Assam has set a target to increase fish production into five tons of lakh metrics by creating a Gen Bank worth Rs 10 Crore, said Minister of Fisheries Fisheries Shuklabaidya on the day of national fish farmers on Saturday.
Recognizing the difficulties and perseverance of an incomparable agricultural community, Suklabaidya thanked the farmers to adopt the latest technology such as biofloc and cage cages to increase production.
“Assam made a stable progress in the fish farm sector since 2016 with production reached 3.93 lakh metric tons.
Fish production will increase to five lakh tons of metrics with the creation of gene banks, where the government has spent Rs 10 Crore,” Minister said on the farm Jungal Fish Berala in Raha in Nagaon Regency on Saturday.
The state government carries out a five-year genes project for indigenous fish projects (GBIF).
Assam was the first northeastern state to reach self-sufficiency in the production of fish seeds with 951.9 crore crore seeds in 2019-20, and supply this to neighboring countries.
The project, which is being carried out through the College of Fisheries, Raha, under Assam Agricultural University, aims to preserve the Plasma Nutfah and restore extinct Assam fish species.
“Unlike in the past, fishing is no longer a sector that is ignored with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in accordance with the top priority for this sector,” he said, adding that the BJP LED Government in Assam had made concert efforts to utilize water resources broad.

Suklabaidya said many young men who had returned to the country because covid-induced locking had taken fish farming by building individual and community pools with government subsidies.
