Bengaluru: Farmers held a massive protest in the city on Tuesday, demanding that prices just and remuneratives (FRP) for sugar cane announced by the center of the current destroyer must be increased.
They marched from the city train station to Freedom Park.
They have planned to walk to Vidhana Soudha, but the police stopped them in Freedom Park.
Then, several farmers led by Kurubur Shantkumar, the President of the State of Karnataka’s sugar cane developer association, met with the Chairman of the Bukavaraj Minister Bommai and filed a memorandum.
Farmers claim that Rs 2,900 per ton of FRP announced by the center does not cover input costs.
They want Rs 3,500 per ton.
“Last year, FRP was Rs 2,850 per ton.
This time, this is Rs 2,900 per ton, up only Rs 50.
Before last year, there was no increase for two years.
But in recent years, the cost of cultivation of sugar cane almost doubled , “Shantkumar said.
In other demands, farmers said that the state government must request sugar to clean up the contributions immediately.
If payment is delayed, the factory must be requested to cough interest of 15 percent.
Farmers also want the advantages of sales of ethanol and other by-products to be shared between them and factory owners and sugar cane which will be taken under PurView PM Fasal Bima Yojana.
Sugar Minister Shankar Patil Munenakoppa said that he had attracted the central attention to the problems of sugar cane farmers.
“I met the United Minister concerned twice and will arrive soon,” said Patil.
He revealed that the sugar factory had deposited Rs 26 Crore with the state government towards the money they owed to sugar cane farmers.
The total contribution is Rs 47 Crore.
