Guwahati: The transportation department in Guwahati has collected more than Rs 14 Crore as a fine by taking action against nearly 20,000 people on charges of violating motor vehicle laws from May last year – when the Minister of Justice Himanta Buswa the government led by Sarma took over – until December.
District Transport Officer, Kamrup (Metro), Gautam Das said the decisive action of the Department of Transportation had mainly reduced the number of fatal road accidents for most.
Most offenders include those who drive two-wheeled vehicles without helmets and drive four-wheeled vehicles without wearing a seat belt, and also those who pamper themselves in a rash and drink driving.
While the fine of RS 4 Crore was collected only in December last year, at the average RS 2.5 Crore was collected every month from May to November.
Matching CM’s appeal, the watershed urged the population of the city to follow the traffic rules to avoid fatal accidents.
“Don’t drive in a hurry or under alcohol influence, and please wear a helmet and safety belt.
We constantly hold conscious campaigns throughout the city to deliver messages to people that their lives are very valuable,” he added.
Following the direction of CM, Police Assam in Guwahati endlessly conducted a campaign with driving.
Harmeet Singh, Police Commissioner, Guwahati, said the drive had reduced the number of fatal road accidents.
