CHANDIGARH: Active Covid cases have declined by 85% since June 1 in the Tricity, a clear indication of the curve flattening even as experts warn of a third wave that can come faster if people do not wear masks and continue to shun social distancing.
“The cases have been declining and with increase in vaccination, they will drop further,” said a public health expert.
However, with the Delta variants, there is a need to adhere to Covid norms.
“It will not take much time for the virus to again spread its tentacles if we do not follow Covid-appropriate behaviour,” said the expert.
AIIM chief Dr Randeep Guleria has already warned that the country could see a third wave of coronavirus infections in six to eight weeks if Covid appropriate behaviour is not followed.
In the city, no deaths had been reported since June 20, while this month has so far seen 53 fatalities.
In May, there were 264 deaths.
The daily recoveries have also decreased from 361 to 56 as positive cases have declined.
The positivity rate has drastically slipped down from 4.7% to 1.5%, while the national rate is 3.1% The testing has also come down from over 2,500 a day until June12 to around1,600 a day till date.
“As the active cases have gone down and consequently contacts are less, tests will be reduced.
However, there is a need to enhance voluntary testing in colonies, markets associations and other congested areas,” said a public health expert.
In Mohali, active cases have decreased from 2,902 to 369.
Similarly, the recovery rate has jumped from 94.64% to 98% in 23 days of June.
It was once as low as 74.8% in April.
Deaths have scaled by 6.62% in June from 963 to 1,043 with 80 people succumbing to the deadly virus in 23 days.
People have started becoming careless and many are found roaming in markets, malls and other public places without masks.
On the other hand, the Mohali police have reduced challans for no masks by 90% in the district with decline in cases.
Police had challaned only 875 people in June.
